A fusion of traditional Sumbanese architecture and modern engineering, the all-bamboo Sumba House is an expression of our love for Indonesia’s Sumba Island and its distinctively shaped houses.
With a dramatically tapered. thatch-covered roof stretching 49 ft. (15m) toward the sky, Sumba House replicates the endemic design of Sumba while adding modern comforts: a downstairs living area with beds and sofas that can be adjusted based on your needs.
Sumba also offers a second-floor sleeping area (accessible by a strong, beautiful bamboo ladder) under a cathedral-like ceiling; a bathroom with copper sinks and a rain shower; and a wraparound bamboo deck with hammocks for lounging.
The windows and skylights delicately filter the sunlight, illuminating the space with a mesmerizing glow, while hand-woven textiles, tribal swords, and natural fiber baskets offer connection to an indigenous culture that has moved us profoundly.
