A rock-lined tunnel scented with incense leads you to a ridge-top bar overlooking the emerald valley.

Explore

We’ve designed Bambu Indah so our guests can experience nature up close, with all of their senses.

The property clings to the side of a rocky, jungle-braided gorge leading down to the Ayung River. Coconut palms and cinnamon trees sway over ferns and blooming frangipani. Hidden corners reveal themselves as the light changes over the course of the day — a flower you hadn’t noticed before, a set of stone steps lit by oil lamps, the sunlight dappling the hills on the far side of the valley. There is always something new to see.

Meander on uneven, rambling paths. Listen to the birds singing and the geckos chirping and the river roaring. Taste food that’s healthful and delicious. Savor the opportunity to just take a deep breath.

Our guests tell us that the peace and quiet and presence of nature that they feel at Bambu Indah makes them never want to leave.

The Pools

At the heart of the Bambu Indah experience are more than 15 natural spring-fed pools set beside the Ayung River — the perfect place to laze the day away.

Soak in the cool, refreshing water, sink into deep cushions or hanging moon chairs, hop over stones to reach one of the bamboo-roofed bales (cabanas), or climb into a pillow-lined pod suspended over the swirling current. The Riverside Warung restaurant overlooks the pools and offers simple and delicious Indonesian-inspired food and drinks.

At the top of the ridge, in our pebble-lined swimming pool, you can float in gentle, salt-chlorinated water and admire the treetops and the clouds. Dry off, find a spot on the viewing deck, and sip a cold drink from the Sunset Elevator Bar as the sun paints its colors on the valley and rice paddies below.

Massages & Healing

Bambu Indah is just outside Ubud, at the vortex of one of the most healing places in the world. Ubud’s energy attracts healers from far and wide, which allows us to offer a wide variety of treatments, including traditional Balinese massage, in our relaxing treatment pods. Our therapists are all hand-picked by the Hardy family; some specialize in energy healing; others in sports massage or the Esalen technique. We can also bring in acupuncturists, yoga instructors, osteopaths, homeopaths, shamans, crystal and brass bowl healers, and more.

For a more private experience, massages and other treatments can take place in the comfort of your room.

Nature &
Trash Walks

Our location on the Sayan Ridge brings both Bali’s natural beauty and its cultural heritage right to our doorstep. Join us for a walk along the Ayung River to see regenerated rice paddies; visit our pigs, ducks, and goats; gaze up at the branches of a 500-year-old banyan tree; and admire the carvings on village temples.  Better yet, make it a Trash Walk: We’ll arm you with a pointy bamboo stick for spearing the plastic bottles and other bits of rubbish that sadly accumulate along the riverbanks and local roads. (You’ll pledge to never buy single-use plastics again!) Or sign up for a Bird Walk with local experts who will help you spot some of the 100 species that surround Bambu Indah.

Rice Planting
& Harvesting

Our rice paddies are a quintessential part of the Bambu Indah experience — they are regenerating the land to how it was used centuries ago, and they provide all of the rice we serve our guests. Most visitors who have eaten rice all their lives have never had the pleasure of planting or harvesting it. Several times a year, we invite you to help us do both — it’s straightforward, if strenuous, work, but also meditative and fulfilling. The effect can be very powerful. Guaranteed, you’ll find a new appreciation for rice!

Bamboo Tour

Over the years, our family has put down roots around Ubud — quite literally in the case of bamboo.

In 2008, John and Cynthia founded the Green School, which has become globally renowned both for its incredible bamboo campus and its innovative approach to teaching and learning. Ibuku, founded by John’s daughter Elora Hardy, is a design studio specializing in bamboo construction that is behind many of the buildings found at Bambu Indah. Elora’s brother Orin established Bamboo Pure Bali, the island’s first bamboo construction company, to realize Ibuku’s visions —  including Green Village, a collection of spectacular bamboo villas and houses that have received global accolades. Orin also operates Bamboo U, an educational program that shares everything we’ve learned about bamboo architecture with the world.

Best of bali

Have you ever jumped off a waterfall? Eaten durian? Dyed your own batik? Climbed a volcano? Ubud and Bali offer a wide range of experiences, from active adventures like whitewater rafting and cycling, to cultural pursuits such as temple blessings and pottery workshops. Engrossing explorations of Bali’s deep history and natural environment are available as well.

We’ve hand-picked the most fascinating, thrilling, life-altering experiences the island has to offer (some of them right here at Bambu Indah) for our guests to enjoy.
